Cape Town City

It’s little wonder that stunning Cape Town is South Africa’s most frequented city. The Mother City, as she is passionately known, occupies a seriously amazing landscape filled with some of the best-known national parks and game reserves on the globe, in addition to the popular Table Mountain. So you can think about my joy at being welcomed on a family holiday, the type that your parents take you on when you are still a kid, the free type, to a family buddy who moved out there. “Absolutely !”, I screamed down the phone. “Count Me In”.

From when we walked off the plane, humming with excitement, the country accepted us. Everyone, from the commercial airline staff to the taxi driver who dropped us off at our wonderful little guesthouse, was so friendly. After checking in we sat down have fun with a cup of chilled South African wine on our terrace and admired the amazing view of the bay.

From our guesthouse, located in the magnificent residential of Fresnaye, we took a stroll towards the popular V&A Waterfront which we later found started off as a small jetty designed in 1654 by Jan van Riebeeck. It was set up to establish a refreshment station at the feet foot of Africa for the Dutch East India Company. ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East would stop over to re-energise while on their pursuit for treasure. We experienced a delightful dinner of rustic al fresco seafood and snacks followed by a amazing sunset. Over the next few days we came back to the V&A Waterfront to example some of the other fare on provide at these amazing Cape Town restaurants, there are over 80 restaurants in the one complex…!.

Chapmans Peak

The next day, on the suggestions of the charming owner of our guesthouse, we forced to Chapman’s Peak Drive. You can also walk or cycle the route but if you enjoy driving then do that as it’s less wet and a lot more thrilling! For 10 km, the street carves into the mountainside on one part, while on the other part it drops hundreds of meters to the ocean. It was a little bit scary but the route is said to be one of the most amazing stretches of coastal street on the globe, so it’s worth the panic. We drawn up in one of the numerous parking bays and ate a picnic on a slope while appreciating the view and capturing of Hout Bay.

Table Mountain

Next on the plan was kloofing on Table Mountain. Kloofing means canyoning in South Africa and it brings together hiking, swimming, climbing, and jumping. Seeing everyone planning to jump from 15 meters high was possibly more very funny than the actual activity, a certain trip highlight, everyone should kloof. We reserved with Abseil Africa. Make sure you book with a accountable travel agency.

We also left ourselves a lot of time to discover some of the shopping on offer. I grabbed some intricately carved wooden animals at Kalk Bay Gallery and Dad grabbed some bottles at Caroline’s Fine Wines on 15 Long St for all close relatives members have fun with at home in the UK.
